I will not relate the details of
the things I saw as a cop;
I know no terror greater than
the depths humans can plumb.
Over fourteen years after leaving that
profession I still have nightmares
saturated in vivid, real-time imagery that
makes me bolt upright at three a.m.,
sweat soaked and gasping for breath.
They will never leave;
perhaps they will fade over time.
I never know when they will return;
I can only pray that it will not be
tonight.
